Twitter Confused By Heidi Klum's Response To Being Called A 'White Woman' Amidst 'AGT' Controversy
Heidi Klum is hurt by the racial backlash she says she received after speaking her truth.
As Page Six reports, Klum’s hardship came after she challenged Gabrielle Union’s claims that “America’s Got Talent” is a sexist and racist work environment. In November, Union was terminated from her position as a judge on the show.
“I’ve only had an amazing experience [on the show],” Klum said during a Television Critics Association event in January. “I can’t speak for [Union]. I didn’t experience the same thing. To me, everyone treats you with the utmost respect.”
On Wednesday, Klum, who’s been a judge on the show for six seasons, told Page Six a lot of people didn’t take her comment well and even identified her by her race.
“A lot of people got mad at me. I was called, for example, ‘a white woman,’” the 46-year-old said. “I think it is important for everyone to speak their truth. I think that when there is a story, it should be told. I had a different story.”
The model feels that her race had nothing to do with the conversation.
“I can only speak to what I saw — it has nothing to do with what color I am,” Klum explained. “I am a human so I just looked at what I saw.”
However, many Twitter users are confused about why Klum was offended by the term “white woman.”
One user tweeted: "Heidi Klum is the whitest white woman who ever whited in the history of white and her coloured children [sic] don't make that less of a fact so what is this white woman talking about?"
Writer Yashar Ali added: "Being called a white woman is a whole lot better than being told your hairstyles are unprofessional due to the color of your skin. Plus, you're white, @heidiklum...you'll be more than fine."
Others even felt that Klum was completely clueless or ignoring racism and the concept of white privilege.
Terry Crews, who is the host of the hit show, also received a ton of criticism for his response to Union’s claims.
"I can't speak for sexism because I'm not a woman... but I can speak on behalf of any racism comments," Crews, 51, said during an interview on the Today show. “That was never my experience.”
Many criticized Crews on social media for being dismissive, when Union so heavily supported him as a sexual assault survivor. Although Crews apologized to Union in a statement on Twitter, many are still upset with Crews and Klum for their responses.
As USA Today reports, Paul Telegdy, the NBC Entertainment chief, released a statement promising "new practices, if necessary" post-investigation of Union's accusations.
