Twitter On Malia Obama Landing TV Writing Gig For Donald Glover Show: 'Privileged'
KEY POINTS
- Malia Obama has joined the writers room for an upcoming Donald Glover series for Amazon, a report says
- Some Twitter users claimed Obama only got the job due to her last name
- Others defended her, saying she also may have worked hard to get where she is
Malia Obama is making her Hollywood debut after scoring a TV writing gig for an Amazon project, but some social media users think her last name may have played a big role in her landing the job right out of college.
Barack and Michelle Obama's eldest daughter has joined the writers room for an upcoming Donald Glover series for Amazon Studios, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The project is Malia's first post-college gig. She is set to graduate from Harvard University as part of the class of 2021.
Malia has been showing interest in entering Hollywood for quite some time, per THR. In 2017, she landed an internship with The Weinstein Company after being an intern on HBO's "Girls." She also previously worked as a production assistant on CBS' "Extant," which stars Halle Berry.
However, a number of Twitter users were not impressed with Malia scoring the job, with one person commenting, "Last names count."
"What a privilege to be the daughter of a former President. Of course famous kids get jobs directly out of college. Meanwhile, average joes are required to have a 4 year degree with 10 years of prior experience in the field, an apprenticeship or internship for an entry level job," another commented on Perez Hilton's post about Malia's writing gig on Twitter.
"Lena Dunham on Malia’s internship: 'you’re not going to ask the President’s daughter to get you coffee,'" a third user wrote, adding, "Just in case you needed more proof Hollywood is a place for the privileged."
"Almost starved to death trying to break into that industry once, congrats to Malia on just kinda landing that gig fresh out of school surely on her own!" another user wrote.
Others, however, believe Malia may also have the talent and had worked hard to get where she is and congratulated her on her new job.
"Considering her father was a literal nobody who came out of pretty much nothing to become president, I'd imagine she has a little talent too," one wrote.
"CONGRATS to Malia Obama on her new writing gig for Donald Glover's Amazon show! It's so nice to see a TV writing job go to a WOC who has been grinding instead of some white man who didn't earn it," another added.
"My take is - she got some high-level internships because of her name, but she must have kicked a-- for that to lead to where she is today," a different user commented.
Meanwhile, the Amazon series Malia has been recruited to work on is tentatively called "Hive" and will revolve around a "Beyoncé-like" public figure, according to THR. The show reportedly stems from writer Janine Nabers, who was previously a producer on HBO’s "Watchman" and a writer for Netflix’s "Away."
