Twitter Reacts To 'Clown' Kelly Rowland Defending Chris Brown At American Music Awards
Destiny's Child alum Kelly Rowland is facing some backlash following her decision to defend singer Chris Brown at the American Music Awards.
On Sunday night, Brown won the award for Favorite Male R&B artist. Brown was up again The Weeknd, Lucky Daye, Brent Faiyaz, and GIVĒON.
Since Brown was a no-show at the ceremony, presenter Rowland was left to accept the award.
Upon announcing Brown as the winner, the crowd began to boo his name, which prompted Rowland to scold the audience. "Excuse me — chill out," Rowland demanded.
"But I wanted to tell Chris, thank you so much for making great R&B music. And I want to tell him thank you for being an incredible performer. I'll take this award, bring it to you. I love you. Congratulations. And congratulations to all the nominees in this category."
Rowland's decision to praise Brown's musical contributions resulted in her name becoming a trending topic on Twitter the following day.
Some users were upset Rowland defended Brown due to his history of domestic violence and allegations of colorism.
"Kelly Rowland is a clown for defending Chris Brown when he wouldn't even let dark-skinned women that look like her in his section @ the club," one person wrote.
Some on social media disagreed with the backlash. One user commended Rowland for defending Brown.
"Kelly Rowland just risked her career for that Chris Brown shout out! I'm so proud of the black community for standing behind Chris in this AMA fiasco," the individual wrote.
"Congrats Breezy! You deserved the win, and everyone deserves a second chance. WE LOVE YOU!"
Brown was initially scheduled to attend the American Music Awards and perform a tribute to the late Michael Jackson for the 40th anniversary of the "Thriller" album.
Days before the ceremony, Brown shared an Instagram video of his rehearsals and revealed the AMAs canceled the performance "for reasons unknown." Brown skipped the ceremony despite his nomination and eventual win.
