The tragic death of a pregnant elephant which had chewed on a pineapple stuffed with explosives sparked angry reactions on social media. The extreme form of animal abuse reported in south India roiled Twitter, where users including celebrities called for exemplary punishment for the men involved.

The wild elephant had left the rainforests of Silent Valley in Palakkad district and wandered into a nearby village in search of food when she chanced upon the pineapple. It exploded in her mouth and left her in unbearable pain. She walked around the village for days on end, unable to eat because of the injuries. The animal later waded into a river and stood there until death.

Netizens have since taken to Twitter and other social media platforms to express their anger and demand action against the guilty.

A wildlife officer of the Silent Valley National Park told ANI that the animal died after suffering an injury to the lower jaw.

Bollywood actors Anushka Sharma, Shraddha Kapoor and Randeep Hooda were some of the people who took to Twitter to speak against the act. Hooda called for strict action against the ones responsible.

Akshay Kumar said the animals are less wild and the humans seem to be less humane.

Aman Banka tweeted there is a natural law of karma whereby those who are vindictive and go out of their way to hurt others will end up alone.

Sharma shared an Instagram post, tagging the chief minister of the Kerala state, where the park is situated, Hindustan Times reported. She gave a heartening sketch of an imaginary conversation that transpired between the mother and her baby, then credited it to Bratuti. The caption detailed the manner in which the elephant was killed.

The post read that a lot of these animals trust human beings.

Kapoor sought justice for the voiceless friends. When one lacks empathy and kindness, there is no reason to be called a human being.

Hooda’s post read that it was extremely inhumane to willfully feed a pineapple that was full of firecrackers to a friendly and wild pregnant elephant. He too tagged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and encouraged them to take harsh actions against the people who did the act.

Apart from illustrating their anger against this inhuman act, people shared drawings and sketches protesting animal cruelty.
