KEY POINTS
- Conor McGregor will face the winner of Khabib-Tony Ferguson match
- McGregor won against Cowboy Cerrone via TKO
- Khabib and McGregor faced sanctions due to their post-fight brawl in UFC 229
We may be seeing a toned-down Conor McGregor should a rematch comes into place.
The two fought in the main card of UFC 229 with McGregor tapping out to Khabib's neck crank in the fourth round but the one that lingers in the memory of UFC fans is the post-fight brawl that happened. Khabib was slapped with a $500,000 fine and nine-month suspension while McGregor was hit with a three-month suspension and a $50,000 fine.
"The Notorious" is more focused on enhancing his skills and avenge his loss once a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov is finally set. “I’m taking a backstep from that and I’m focusing on the skills. It’s a very skillful bout,” the Irishman said via MMA Fighting. “He poses a specific style set and I pose a specific style set and it’s an interesting clash with two fully focused fighters and that’s what will happen in the next bout. I look forward to it, to settling it.”
Khabib is in preparations for his UFC 249 fight against Tony Ferguson and reports are starting to swirl that the winner of their match-up will be the one that Conor will face per reports from TalkSport. “Probably the winner of Khabib (Nurmagomedov) and Tony (Ferguson),” said Dana White.
“I look forward to that competition fully focused. You can see the shape of me. Everyone knows. No matter what, that man can run but he cannot hide from it,” McGregor said. His mild demeanor was in full display during the press conference between his most recent fight against Donald Cerrone last month.
McGregor destroyed “Cowboy” in just 40 seconds, making his triumphant return after a 15-month hiatus and the win was his first after over three years – a second-round TKO victory over Eddie Alvarez for the UFC Lightweight championship.
Both McGregor and Cerrone exchanged pleasantries throughout their match, both before and after the fight. Cerrone’s grandma even went to the stage to greet McGregor that made the crowd go wild.
