KEY POINTS

- He is self isolating but will be in control of government response to the virus spread
- London is the epicenter of the virus spread in the United Kingdom
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Friday he has tested positive for coronavirus but will continue to lead the country while self-isolating.
Johnson posted a video on Friday morning on social media, saying he had a slight fever and a persistent cough. He also said he is working from home, which he characterized as the best course of action.
A spokesman from Downing street said Johnson was tested for the virus on the advice of Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty after exhibiting mild symptoms.
The news bolstered fears the crisis is escalating in Europe, raisinng concerns other senior officials are infected. Prince Charles tested positive just two days ago, making him the first royal to contract the disease.
Downing Street insisted, however, there is no need for other government officials to get tested unless they display symptoms.
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab will serve as acting prime minister should Johnson become incapacitated.
London is considered the epicenter of the outbreak in the United Kingdom. Health Minister Nadine Dorries was the first member of Parliament confirmed to have the virus. She has since recovered and returned to her duties.
The United Kingdom has confirmed 11,816 cases with at least 578 deaths.
Johnson took questions in the Commons on Wednesday, increasing fears other politicians have been infected even though the attendees were well spaced in the chamber.
Cabinet meetings on Tuesday were held by video conference.
