The Armed Forces of Ukraine on Wednesday successfully pushed back Russian units attempting to advance in several directions and inflicted losses on them, according to a report.
The Russian military attempted to improve its positions in the direction of Vesela Dolyna, Bakhmut, Zaytseve and Mayorsk settlements in Bakhmut Oblast. However, it failed to break through Ukraine's defenses and was forced to withdraw from their positions.
"In the Bakhmut direction, the occupiers fired at military and civilian infrastructure facilities in the Bakhmut, Soledar, Zaytseve districts. Ukrainian defense forces repelled enemy offensive attempts in the direction of Vesela Dolyna, Bakhmut, Zaytseve, Mayorsk settlements," the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (UAF) wrote in a report.
The Russian soldiers also attempted to advance in the Avdiivka direction, firing tanks, barrels and jet artillery at several settlements. However, they were repulsed by the Ukrainian military.
"In the Avdiivka direction, the enemy fired from tanks, barrel and jet artillery near Avdiivka, Opytne, Umanske, Pervomaiske and Staromykhailivka. It made an unsuccessful attack attempt in the direction of the settlements of Avdiivka, Pervomaiske, Krasnohorivka and Maryinka, suffered losses and retreated," the UAF General Staff said.
The Russian army also tried to move ahead in the direction of Prudyanka in Kharkiv Oblast and the Pobyeda area in Novopavlivske. However, both attempts were foiled by the Ukrainian army.
According to estimates by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, at least 350 Russian soldiers were killed Wednesday, raising Moscow's military death toll in the war to 47,900. The Ukrainian army has destroyed a total of 1,974 Russian tanks, 4,312 combat armored vehicles, 1,091 artillery systems and 3,236 vehicles and fuel tanks since the invasion began in February, the ministry said.
The UAF General Staff's report comes as officials from the U.S. suggest that Russia is now facing "severe" shortages of military personnel and is seeking ways to recruit more service members to make up for its losses in Ukraine.
The officials said that they believe the Russian Ministry of Defense's efforts to beef up its troop levels will include compelling injured soldiers to be redeployed to the battlefield and paying bonuses to people willing to be conscripted.
