A Ukrainian soldier wrote a poem in response to a letter from his daughters even as he continues the fight against Russian invaders. The poem, shared on Twitter has since gone viral and left social media users in tears.
"The poem by #Ukrainian soldier @vyshebaba written as an answer to his daughtersʼ letters has been already translated into 10 languages in just one week. #LifeWillPrevail," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine tweeted, sharing the poem.
The soldier starts the poem with, "Don’t write about the war to me, Just answer: is there a garden near? Do snails crawl on grass and do you hear cicadas singing, grasshoppers flee?"
The father writes about how he wishes to remove the sorrow from his daughters' letters. "If someone brings a bouquet you like, don't tell them about scary missile strike. Instead, talk more of this life of ours," he continues.
The post received hundreds of comments, with many saying they believe Ukraine will soon be out of its misery and shine.
Several parts of the country have been left in ruins since the Russian invasion on Feb. 24. Thousands of soldiers and civilians have died since. There have been multiple reports of the invaders carrying out unspeakable atrocities on innocent Ukrainians, and several towns turning into mass graves as bodies of innocent civilians were found scattered throughout.
Residential buildings, schools and hospitals were bombarded as Russia tried to advance into the country's heart. The war entered its fourth month with Ukrainian forces fighting hard to push the Russian troops out.
"So beautiful, l loved it. I did wipe away a couple of tears after reading it, & then l prayed for the author, her dad & the translator, including everyone in Ukraine, for their safety & well being. I thanked God for allowing me to see & read this poem this morning, at 4.40am," one user wrote in the comments.
Another user was hopeful that the soldiers fighting for their country will be able to witness nature's beauty rather than the horrific war zone.
"Hopefully next spring you’ll watch the three’s [sic] blossom and listen to cicada’s, in peaceful Ukraine together again," the user wrote, while a third user said: "A Father's hope for his children continuing life during and after the war. A lesson of life and hope."
It remains unclear when the poem was written and where the soldier's family was.
