'Umbrella Academy' Fans Say Vanya Doesn't Need Recast After Elliot Page's Coming Out
“Umbrella Academy” star Elliot Page took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce he’s transgender and non-binary.
Page is best known for his roles in “Juno,” “Tales of the City” as well as his role as Vanya Hargreeves in “Umbrella Academy.”
He’s already changed his name on Twitter to Elliot Page and explained in his announcement that his new pronouns will be he/they.
“Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot,” Page wrote.
“I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life. I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey. I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self,” he continued.
He’s received much love and gratitude from thousands of users already. Netflix, which airs "Umbrella Academy," also replied to the tweet showing support for the star.
“Umbrella Academy” was recently picked up for its third season, and Season 3 will start filming in Feb. 2021. Page has been a series regular since Season 1.
"Umbrella Academy" follows seven children who were adopted by a billionaire, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, and trained to be superheroes. Viewers watch as the actual Umbrella Academy is created in the beginning of the show, which prepares and trains Sir Reginald's seven children to save the world. It then fast-forwards to their adult years when they reconnect to solve their father's death while the apocalypse is near.
Thousands of users on Twitter tweeted their opinions to Netflix directly saying how much they would love to see this worked into future seasons of the sci-fi drama.
Vanya, who Page plays, is one of two sisters in the large Hargreeves family. Vanya identifies as a cis-gender female, which Page is obviously not. This led to some discussion about whether Page should be recast. However, the majority of fans seemed to voice support, noting that they'd like to see Vanya transition.
Two of Page's co-stars who play Vanya's brothers, Justin H. Min and David Castañeda, replied to his coming out message to show their love.
Page is being celebrated across social media and is also being described as an inspiration to the LGBTQ community.
“Elliot Page has given us fantastic characters on-screen, and has been an outspoken advocate for all LGBTQ people,” said Nick Adams, GLAAD’s director of transgender media. “He will now be an inspiration to countless trans and non-binary people. All transgender people deserve the chance to be ourselves and to be accepted for who we are. We celebrate the remarkable Elliot Page today.”
Page came out as gay in 2014 and has been married to Emma Portner, a Canadian professional dancer, since 2018.
