A man was arrested for stabbing his brother in the neck with a knife during an argument at their home in Layton, Utah, on Monday (June 15).

Layton City Police responded to reports of a stabbing at a home on Parkside Lane on Monday night. The accused, identified as 27-year-old Preston Robert Johnson, was arguing with his brother about Johnson’s son playing with a rubber band gun in the house. The dispute became physical following which, the man took out his gauged earrings and pricked Johnson with them, leaving two pinpoint marks on his neck.

According to the arrest document, Johnson then went to the kitchen, grabbed an 8-inch butcher knife, and stabbed the victim in the neck.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim on the front steps of the home profusely bleeding from a deep wound to the neck. The knife had pierced through the victim’s neck and mouth. He was transported to the University of Utah Hospital by helicopter. He underwent surgery for his injuries and was said to be in a serious but stable condition as of Tuesday.

According to the affidavit, his 7-year-old son had witnessed most or all of the fight.

When interviewed by the police, Johnson admitted to stabbing his brother in the neck and chest after his brother tried to strangle him. Johnson added that he did not intend to hurt or kill his brother.

The father of the brothers, who witnessed the incident, told police that the accused was not trying to kill his brother.

Johnson was booked on suspicion of second-degree felony aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury and third-degree felony domestic violence in the presence of a child. He was being held at Davis County Jail in Farmington without a bail. Formal charges had not been filed as of Wednesday morning.

The case was still under investigation. No further information was available at the time.
