'Valheim' Survival Guide: How To Hunt A Sea Serpent
KEY POINTS
- Sea serpents are difficult to fight due to how water and sailing works
- An abyssal harpoon can be used to drag a sea serpent back to the surface
- Abyssal harpoons require Chitin, a material that can only be found on Krakens
Among the many creatures in “Valheim,” the sea serpents are the more difficult ones to deal with. These monsters can only be encountered in the Ocean biome, and due to how sailing works in the game, fighting sea serpents can prove to be challenging at first.
Sea serpents have the home advantage over players in the Ocean. Their mobility will be far greater than that of any Viking boat that isn’t riding the wind or the waves. Take this advantage away, however, and sea serpent encounters will be trivialized.
The primary goal is to create an Abyssal Harpoon, a hunting tool made out of Fine Wood, Chitin and Leather Scraps.
“Valheim” players should at least have a Karve, the tier two boat, before they go looking for serpents. The ordinary Raft is too fragile and slow for sea serpent encounters. Karves can take more damage and move faster than rafts, making them more ideal.
Once a Karve is made, “Valheim” players should bring a bow and plenty of arrows and set out into the sea. The bow and arrows are only there as an initial self-defense option in case a big serpent decides to swim near their location.
The primary material for the harpoon is Chitin, which can be mined off Krakens that have surfaced on the water. Krakens appear as very small “islands” with small rocks and trees on the surface. They aren’t hostile, but they will submerge if players stay too long on them. Players can mine Chitin off of the Barnacles on a Kraken’s hide.
Once enough Chitin is obtained, the Abyssal Harpoon can be crafted on a level two Workbench. It functions similarly to a spear except it can be used to reel in targets that it hits after being thrown.
Players can then use their harpoons to drag a sea serpent all the way back to land where it’s virtually harmless. Simply throw the harpoon at the serpent and navigate back to shore. Once it’s beached, hit it with any weapon and it should go down without a fight.
Serpents drop Serpent Meat that can be cooked into food that gives powerful buffs. They also drop Serpent Scales that can be crafted into a special shield and Serpent Trophies that can be mounted on walls as mementos of victory.
