Vanessa Hudgens has apologized after being attacked by Twitter users following her insensitive coronavirus statement.
On Monday, the “High School Musical” star fielded questions from her Instagram followers during a live Q&A. She also made a statement about the widespread fear that the suggestion to self-quarantine could last until the summer.
“Yeah, ’til July sounds like a bunch of [explicit]. I’m sorry,” Hudgens said to the camera. “It’s a virus, I get it. I respect it. But at the same time, like, even if everybody gets it … yeah, people are gonna die. Which is terrible but, like, inevitable?” Hudgens said.
Hudgens’ statement quickly made the rounds online, with many expressing their dismay and disappointment after hearing it. Several slammed her for being so insensitive.
"I know vanessa hudgens as gabriella montez in high school musical 2 said, ‘i gotta say what’s on my mind’ but vanessa hudgens as vanessa hudgens in real life in 2020 talking about the coronavirus should’ve just been quiet," one online user wrote.
“This will haunt her for the rest of her life. To laugh at this unthinkable tragedy, with an almost unimaginable scale of suffering. Unconscionable,” another added.
“She'll be dead to many people after this. ‘It's, like, inevitable,’” @JuliaDavisNews opined.
After the backlash she received, Hudgens immediately apologized. In a video, she said that some of her statements were taken out of context. She added that “it’s a crazy, crazy time” and confessed she’s at home and in lock down. She said that she doesn’t take the situation lightly and is hoping that the others are doing the same. She also encouraged everyone to stay safe at home.
Hudgens also released a statement on Twitter to make herself clear. She admitted that the incident was a wake up call for her.
“I’m so sorry for the way i have offended anyone and everyone who has seen the clip from my Instagram live yesterday,” Hudgens wrote.
“I realized my words were insensitive and not at all appropriate for the situation our country and the world are in right now. This has been a huge wake up call about the significance my words have, now more than ever.”
