Some quick thinking by bystanders saved the life of a preschooler dangling outside an apartment building.

The incident occurred in the Chongqing Municipality in Southwestern China when a 3-year-old boy was left home alone while his grandmother went out for groceries. While home, he managed to get outside his family’s sixth floor apartment. He then climbed over the balcony and was stuck dangling from there while no one was able to get to him from the inside.

Several bystanders noticed the boy dangling and started working to find a way to help ensure the boy’s safety. As the boy tried holding on, the people below managed to roll out a blanket and brace it so the boy could fall safely.

The rescue was also caught on video and posted online shortly after.

“I looked up and saw a little child was dangling up there,” Zhu Yanhui told local China Central Television. Yanhui was also among the people who helped save the young boy.

Yanhui continued: “My first reaction was to find something to catch him. I thought about rushing over there and catch him with my bare hands, but that would not have worked. I held out the blanket along with others, all the while keeping my eyes on the child. I looked at the blanket wondering whether we could catch him safely. My only thought was to keep him safe.”

The boy was then taken to a local hospital to be checked out, but suffered no injuries as a result of the incident.
