A massive riot broke out Saturday amongst soccer spectators at Corregidora Stadium in the central Mexico city of Querétaro. Authorities said 26 people were injured, three of them critically, though there have been differing reports about the number of injuries.

The riot began to erupt about 62 minutes into a match between clubs Queretaro and Atlas. Stadium security opened the gates to the field for fans to escape the stands.

Reports on Sunday provided unconfirmed accounts of injuries and fatalities. Mexican journalist Héctor de Mauleón posted on Twitter that 44 people were injured, two of them in serious condition, and that no deaths were reported. Television journalist David Medrano Felix reported that there was a death toll of 17.

Fans had clashed in varied parts of the stadium with using chairs and poles as weapons. Graphic video showed some fans lying motionless on the ground.

Liga MX announced that a thorough investigation is underway.

“Unacceptable and unfortunate violence in the Estadio Corregidora in Querétaro. Those responsible for the lack of security in the stadium will be punished as an example. The safety of our players and fans is priority! We will continue reporting,” Liga MX President Mikel Arriola said in a tweet.

Queretaro Gov. Mauricio Kuri condemned the riot in a tweet.

“I strongly condemn today’s violence at the Corregidora Stadium. I have given instructions to apply the law with all its consequences," the tweet read.

The match will resume again at a later date. Atlas was leading, 1-0.

All Liga MX games for Sunday were suspended.
