Viral Video Shows Poisonous Cobra Being Rescued From Abandoned Well
A viral video has surfaced online showing a venomous snake being rescued from an abandoned well in India.
The 2-minute-long video clip recorded in Nashik, a city in Maharashtra, shows a group of volunteers from a government wildlife research organization working to rescue the 2-foot-long Indian spectacled cobra from the deep well with the help of a hook and rope.
"The volunteers of a non-government wildlife research organization rescued a highly venomous snake, an Indian spectacled cobra (Naag) from an abandoned well in the Nashik area of Maharashtra yesterday," the video's caption read.
In the video, one of the volunteers lowers the rope down into the well while another makes efforts to keep the cobra at a safe distance so that it doesn't bite. The former man then guides the serpent toward a black bag and manages to capture it. The video has since gone viral with more than 30,000 views.
"We received a call about a snake stuck in a well. When we reached the location, we saw the snake was exhausted. The well was full of water and it had no platform to rest on," Vaibhav Bhogale, a volunteer with Eco Foundation, told India.com. Since it was pretty difficult for them to go down below to rescue the cobra, they made use of the rope instead, he further explained.
The Indian cobra, also known as binocellate cobra, belongs to the Naja species found in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan. The cobra is considered to be one of the "big four" venous species that inflict the most dangerous bites. The heavy-bodied Indian cobra is easily distinguished by its relatively large hood, with many specimens exhibiting a special hood mark. The cobra varies in size, color, and pattern and its most preferred hiding locations are holes in embankments, tree hollows, termite mounds, rock piles, and small mammal dens.
In a similar incident, fitness and performance coach Roger Snipes was seen risking his life to rescue a snake in a 4-minute-long video clip. Snipes, after several failed attempts to lift it to the surface, splashed water on the snake to direct it toward another man, who was seen climbing down small steps inside the well. He was seen grabbing the snake by the tail and rescuing it with the help of a hook. The clip went viral on social media, garnering over 3 million views.
