Volkswagen Teases New I.D. Concept Car To Be Revealed At Detroit Auto Show 2017
Volkswagen will present another model of the I.D. family next month, the company announced Thursday.
The carmaker debuted its concept compact electric car, under its I.D. generation, at the Paris International Motor Show in September. At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Volkswagen will reveal a new model. The show will run between Jan. 8-22.
“Volkswagen is presenting a new model of the I.D. family – a multi-functional vehicle of a new era,” the company said in a press release. “The concept vehicle forges links between the legendary origins of the Volkswagen brand and its electrifying future. Like the I.D., this concept is also based on the Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB), and so it shows the potential and bandwidth of the MEB.”
Volkswagen says the car, which has two electric motors, all-wheel drive and a “multifunctional, flexible interior,” will be “fully autonomous in the future.”
Just by pressing on the Volkswagen logo, the electrically retractable steering wheel disappears into the cockpit. The driver can then let the car take over as, laser scanners, ultrasonic and radar sensors and cameras monitor other road users and the surroundings, the company said.
Volkswagen released a short, 10-second trailer of the company’s new I.D. model:
“Its overall concept is revolutionary,” Volkswagen said about the new I.D. model. “It combines ample space for travel with a long electric driving range. A new feeling of freedom – with zero emissions.”
