Every day since sports resumed amidst the global pandemic, professional athletes around the world face the extraordinary challenge of playing in spite of COVID-19's constant threat.

With the United States not yet fully recovered from the global health crisis, players are not spared either from possible issues that may surface.

Golden State Warriors guard Damion Lee just detailed the serious ordeal he just underwent first-hand in the past few weeks when he tested positive in spite of having been fully vaccinated.

"I did test positive for COVID about two weeks ago. I've taken the vaccine [in] the middle-end of March," Lee shared on Thursday. "Essentially, this was just a rare breakthrough case."

The 28-year-old shooting guard said among the symptoms he experienced included "headache, chills, sneezing, congestion, soreness, [and] body aches."

"It felt like I was hit by a car, hit by two cars at once. Every step I took, it hurt, there was pain, soreness, felt like there was a weight on my chest for a couple of days, like it was hard to breathe, loss of appetite," he detailed.

Lee has been out since April 19. In the 57 games he played this season, the Louisville product has been serviceable off the bench with averages of 6.5 points and 3.2 rebounds in 18.9 minutes per game.

Lee also had "brain fog" wherein he "lost track" of a conversation he just started "five minutes in." He clarified that his case was rare.

"After doing the research for everything, it's been about 6,000 people that have tested positive breakthrough cases out of the over 80 million people that have been fully vaccinated," Lee shared.

"Right now, there is no timeline in the immediate future for me coming back and playing. I still have protocols and hurdles I have to clear on the medical side. After that, it's just a matter of getting back in basketball shape."

Lee's experience serves as a reminder that the medical world has not yet fully conquered COVID-19 yet, and each day unlocks new knowledge towards finally figuring out how to safely live with it.
