WATCH: 21-Year-Old College Pitcher Throws Record-Breaking Fastball
KEY POINTS
- Ben Joyce breaks the college record with a 105.5 MPH fastball
- Joyce falls short of breaking the fastest pitch record of 105.8 MPH
- Joyce's triple-digit velocity performance is likely drawing attention from MLB teams
The 2022 MLB Draft may still be a long way to go, but one individual may have already captured the fancy of clubs in the league.
Ben Joyce of the University of Tennessee entered the college baseball record books when he pitched a 105.5 MPH fastball for the Volunteers in the eighth inning of their game against the Auburn Tigers on Sunday, May. 1.
Joyce entered the game in the sixth inning, throwing four innings of scoreless relief while striking out six.
The 21-year-old was allowed just one hit and didn’t walk anybody.
The performance also lowered his season ERA to 0.86. Joyce now has 38 strikeouts in just 21 innings this season.
It was the fastest pitch ever thrown in college baseball history that also broke a record that the 21-year-old set in March. Joyce threw a 104 MPH fastball against South Carolina at the time.
However, the 105.5 MPH thrown by Joyce fell short of breaking another record, something credited to Cuban MLB player Aroldis Chapman.
Chapman still holds the record after throwing 105.8 MPH back in 2010. He was still a member of the Cincinnati Reds.
A glimpse of Joyce's feat was captured by The Athletic and was shared on social media.
However, it appears Joyce's remarkable pitching is something that he has been doing consistently. He has exceeded the 100 MPH mark in the past while playing for the No. 1-ranked Volunteers.
On Sunday, the finance major threw 28 pitches at 103 MPH or higher, 15 at 104 MPH or higher, and three at 105 MPH.
Although he fell short of breaking his record of Chapman, he will get several more chances as he progresses.
His consistent triple-digit velocity has been much-talked-about in college baseball, a good precedent with the 2022 MLB Draft happening in the coming months.
This is his first season of pitching for the Volunteers. He redshirted last year following his arrival from Walters State Community College.
Tennessee currently has the best record in the SEC at 19-2 and 40-4 overall.
