A CCTV footage released by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ( RSPCA) on Monday, shows a man abandoning a dog at the side of a road in Stoke-on-Trent, England and driving away.

In the video, the man can be seen getting off the car carrying a dog bed and leading the Staffordshire bull terrier. He then throws the bed on the pavement, unclips the lead and runs back to the vehicle. The dog runs behind the man and jumps up at the window while the car is parked. When the man drives off, the distressed dog fruitlessly chases the car down.

An hour later, a passerby found the dog sitting in its bed and called the RSPCA, who named the animal Snoop.

RSPCA Inspector Perehovsky said, "The footage has to be seen to be believed, it's just awful. To see the poor dog in such obvious distress jumping up at the car as it drives away it just heartbreaking. He's currently being cared for at a private boarding kennel where he will get all the care he needs whilst I investigate further.

“It's beggars belief that someone could abandon a dog like this at Christmas, but we are so thankful to the kind people who found Snoop sitting sadly in his bed, for taking him to the safety of a vet straight away,” she added, the Sun reported.

Appealing for information in the case, she said, “One man can be seen clearly in the footage dumping the dog, and there is a second person in the driver seat. Anyone who recognizes the vehicle, the dog or the men in the footage can contact me in complete confidence, by leaving me a message on our inspector's appeal line number on 0300 123 8018.”

The Stoke Sentinel reported that several people have offered to give the dog a home after the video went viral.

This includes BBC political presenter Andrew Neil who said, “So disturbed by this footage. I say to RSPCA if you have trouble re-homing this little dog, I will take it gladly. I have been in tears. It was how the little dog tried to get back in the car that killed me."
