Friday's terrorist attack in London Bridge that killed two and injured many would have claimed more victims had the bystanders not interfered and fought the attacker and pinned him down before the police arrived.

The attacker, wearing a hoax explosive device was shot dead by police.

Videos showed bystanders using fire retardants to fend off the knife-wielding attacker Usman Khan and pushed him down before the police took over, per CBS news.

Fishmongers' Hall where the attack began and killed two people had become “nightmare”, according to Toby Williamson, chief executive of the Hall.

He said the staff thought the attacker was wearing a bomb.

Williamson recounted the courageous act of Lukasz and Andy who used chairs, fire extinguishers, and narwhal tusks ripped off the wall to hit back at Khan, BBC News reported.

Neil Basu, London Police's counterterrorism chief, said Khan was wearing a “hoax explosive device.”

Victims identified

Meanwhile, London's Metropolitan Police announced the identity of the man and woman killed in the terror incident.

The victims, Jack Merritt, 25, and Saskia Jones, 23 were participating in the University of Cambridge's “Learning Together” prisoner education event at Fishmongers' Hall where the deadly knife attack took place.

Khan, 28, began the stabbing attack while attending the event.

The victims were graduates of the University of Cambridge. The identity of another stabbing victim was not released. But the school said it was their staff member.

Learning Together, launched in 2014, had the mission to educate prisoners alongside undergraduate university students. Merrit's family described him as “our beautiful, talented boy” and said he “died doing what he loved.”

Saskia’s family said she was a kind and positive soul and influenced many people's lives and “always wanted to see the best in all people.”

The attacker was released in December 2018 and was on probation. He spent six years in prison from 2012 on terrorism charges.

Among the survivors, two are still in hospital while one has already been released, police said.

Johnson blames Labor for releasing the attacker

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson blamed the Labour party for the release of Khan, the terrorist who killed two people on London Bridge.

Speaking at the Andrew Marr Show of BBC, Johnson termed “ridiculous” freeing someone like Khan midway through an earlier sentence.

The PM also added: “The reason this killer was out on the streets was because of automatic early release which was brought in by a leftie government.”
