Watch As Plane Flies Past 3 Tornadoes In Terrifying Video
Terrifying video shared on social media shows a passenger plane flying past three tornado formations over the Black Sea near Sochi, Russia. Extreme weather in the area caused several flights to divert to other locations as a result.
It was not clear Friday where the plane shown in the footage was traveling from. The Sochi Express, a local news outlet, reported Tuesday that gusting winds and heavy rain — as well as the aforementioned tornadoes — were responsible for the diversion of at least nine flights that landed at airports near Anapa and Krasnodar instead.
The Daily Mail reported Thursday that the plane is thought to have landed safely but noted that passengers aboard the craft likely experienced turbulence.
Another social media users shared images of the weather phenomena to Instagram, with one claiming to have seen as many as twelve waterspout formations nearby.
“At once we were able to count 12 formations and tornadoes simultaneously,” Pavel Petrovskiy wrote in an English translation of one photo’s caption. “This is a huge luck and a rarity, of course. To say that we are soaked is not to say anything.”
Another video that appears to have captured Tuesday’s weather in the area was shared Tuesday to YouTube.
Tuesday’s event in Russia wasn’t the only time that aircraft and tornadoes have collided in headlines recently. United Airlines came under fire last week after the pilot of a Newark, New Jersey-bound flight told already delayed passengers they would be flying through “horrific storms including tornadoes.”
Passenger Pamela Kent told NJ.com that the pilot advised those on the flight that the trip would be “very turbulent” and that they should “get to know your neighbors.”
“We would never put our crew or our passengers in a situation where it was unsafe to fly,” airline spokeswoman Natalie Noonan said in a statement at the time. “The safety of the passengers and the crew is always our No. 1 priority.”
In a statement to International Business Times regarding the incident, a spokesperson said last week that customers would be compensated for delays with the flight that resulted from a mechanical issue.
