KEY POINTS

  • Ronaldo now has scored most goals in a single season for Juventus
  • Juventus have been eliminated from Champions League based on away goals
  • He scored twice in Juventus' 2-1 win over Lyon

Cristiano Ronaldo broke a 95-year-old Juventus record but that was not enough to help the Italian side escape getting eliminated from the 2019-20 Champions League on Friday.

Ronaldo scored a brace in Juventus’ 2-1 victory over Lyon at Allianz Stadium in their return leg of Round of 16. Juventus did not have an away goal, courtesy of their 1-0 loss at Lyon’s home, and the final aggregate was 2-2 at the end of both the legs. Therefore, Lyon progressed to the quarter-final of this season’s Champions League based on away goals.

The two goals in the Friday match took Ronaldo’s goals’ tally to 37 in the ongoing campaign. He has now scored the most goals in a single season for Juventus, breaking 35-goal tally of Ferenc Hizrez — a record he registered during the 1925-26 season and that stood for 95 long years.

Even though Juventus are out of the tournament, Ronaldo can be at least assured of the fact that he did everything possible to help his side remain alive in the European tournament. His penalty and a left-footed screamer from just outside the box also ensured the Portuguese continued to remain the undisputed king of the knockout stages. He has now scored 67 Champions League knockout goals, while the second and the third on the list – Lionel Messi and Thomas Muller have scored 47 and 21 respectively.

Ronaldo, who has won five Champions League titles so far in his career – as many as FC Barcelona – has experienced a Round of 16 elimination only twice, and coincidently, on both occasions, Lyon have been the opponents. The first time was during the 2009-10 season, his first at Real Madrid when Lyon eliminated the Spanish giants in the last-16.

With seven goals, Ronaldo now is in level with Filippo Inzaghi, who played for Juventus between 1997 and 2001, for the second-most goals for the Serie A side in the Champions League knockout stages. Only Alessandro del Piero has scored more – nine goals in the knockout stages.
