Apple recently released the watchOS 7 public beta, allowing Apple Watch users to test and see the new features coming to the latest operating system for the wearable device.
The release of watchOS 7 public beta comes as a welcome surprise to many, given that Apple doesn't normally release public betas of watchOS versions to the general public. With watchOS 7, however, it appears that the Cupertino tech giant is taking a different approach and is giving more users an early glimpse of what is to come to the health-oriented fitness wearable.
Here's how to install the watchOS 7 public beta on an Apple Watch:
- First, users will need to make sure that their iPhone is running on iOS 14 because without it, the Apple Watch will not be able to download and run watchOS 7.
- Second, on the iPhone, users should open Safari (or another browser) and head to the Apple Beta Software Program website.
- Third, once there, tap the chevron in the top-right corner then select Sign In from the menu. Users should enter their Apple ID credentials when asked.
- Fourth, at this point, a guide for Public Betas screen will appear. Users should select the watchOS tab, look for the Get Started section, then enroll the Apple Watch.
As a rule of thumb, users should avoid installing betas on their primary devices as these might have bugs and issues that could affect the use of the device. Users are advised to test the watchOS 7 public beta on a secondary Apple Watch, if possible.
- After enrolling the Apple Watch, scroll down and tap Download Profile.
- Next, follow on-screen instructions on how to install the watchOS 7 public beta.
- Users should tap Allow to download the beta profile on the iPhone.
- Once the profile has been downloaded, tap on Install, then enter the passcode if asked.
- Next, users should read the consent information to know important details. Users will then need to tap Install two more times after this.
- Tap on Restart if and when prompted to restart the iPhone.
- Once the iPhone is up and running, launch the Watch app.
- Once there, users should go to General, then to Software Update.
Users should see watchOS 7 as available for download. Once it appears, users should place the Apple Watch on its charger, then tap Download and Install on their iPhone.
The Apple Watch will restart after a while and will run on the new watchOS 7 public beta when it's up.
