The Weeknd is not only one of the most popular musicians today but also one of the highest paid, earning an estimated $40 million last year despite taking a break from touring.

Born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, the Canadian rapper began his music career in 2010, uploading songs on Youtube with Jeremy Rose as producer. The tracks caught the attention of fans and fellow Canadian Drake, who posted them to his blog.

The Weeknd met Drake in 2009 when a songwriting group he was part of wrote a track for the rapper, according to Rolling Stone. He later performed the opening act for the European leg of Drake’s 2013 tour.

The Weeknd grew his fanbase after releasing his first mixtape, "House of Balloons," in 2011. It was in 2012 when he finally broke into the scene after signing with Republic Records and then creating his own record label called X.O.

The Ontario, Canada native’s music is a mix of indie and electronic styles with undertones of R&B. He is also known for his emotional lyrics. The rapper has named Michael Jackson and Prince his music influences.

His first studio album, "Kiss Land," debuted at no. 2 on the Billboard 200 in 2013. The Weeknd’s second studio effort, "Beauty Behind the Madness," went on to become platinum and was the 10th best-selling album of 2015.

In 2016, “Starboy” was released and quickly gained international fame. It featured collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Daft Punk and Lana Del Rey, among others. “Starboy” also broke the Guinness World record for the most amount of streams on Spotify in a single day.

From 2017 to 2018, The Weeknd made $92 million due to his massive "Starboy: Legend of the Fall" world tour, where he made $1.1 million per stop, Forbes reported.

The Weeknd ranked 87th on Forbes' 2019 Celebrity 100 list, earning $40 million after taking a break from touring. He was also a part of the magazine's 30 under 30: Music list in 2016.

Aside from touring, producing and releasing albums, The Weeknd also earns from endorsement deals with Puma and Bacardi and collaborations with Apple Music A Bathing Ape and Alexander Wang, among others.

On the personal side, The Weeknd used to be in a relationship with supermodel Bella Hadid. The two first split in 2016, got back together in 2019 and went their separate ways once more just months later. The singer also dated Selena Gomez for 10 months in 2017.

The singer owns a house in Beverly Hills Country Club, which has a price tag of $21 million.

The Weeknd is a recipient of several prestigious trophies, taking home several Grammys, Billboard Awards and American Music Awards over the years. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2016 for his song "Earned It" for the "Fifty Shades of Grey" soundtrack.
