What Is BTS? Interesting Facts About The World's Biggest K-Pop Boy Band
As the year wraps up so do the social media stats with Twitter unveiling the most tweeted personalities. The name with the most mentions turned out to be BTS.
Not sure who BTS is? You're not alone. But 17.2 million loyal followers say otherwise.
BTS is a seven-member Korean boy band from Seoul that not only has a giant fanbase on the social media platform but has surged into the top musicians’ spot with hits such as “Idol” and “Fake Love.” They even got a little chummy with Drake tweeting their own video of the #InMyFeeling Challenge to the hit song of the same name.
The meaning behind the BTS acronym varies. The K-Pop group has been known as Bangtan Sonyeondan or Bulletproof Boy Scouts, but other names include Bangtan Boys and Beyond the Scene.
BTS made their musical debut in 2013. The band is comprised of photogenic members — RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, V, Jimin and Jungkook — who are as young as 21 years old and as old 26 years old.
The band was honored at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards for Top Social Artist of the Year. This is the same year that BTS really took off in popularity and began their breakthrough into the U.S. The same night the band performed at the awards show as the first Korean performers to grace the stage. In May, they became the first K-Pop group to reach No. 1 on the Billboard top 200.
BTS is more unconventional that some might think. Unlike a majority of pop groups, BTS has taken on social and political topics in their songs such as racism and consumerism, as well as mental illness. They also have songs that have drawn a stronger male following than some might expect for a group that seems to overtly target young women.
Currently, BTS is on both the Billboard 200 Albums and the Billboard Top Artists charts, which has paved the way for the band’s ARMY of fans to amass – another acronym that stands for Adorable Representatives M.C. for Youth.
