Daniel Day-Lewis announced Tuesday he would retire from acting. The Oscar winner will be going out on top both in accolades and in bank account size.
Day-Lewis, 60, is the only person to win three Best Actor Academy Awards. Before he retires from Hollywood, he is slated to star in one final film, “Phantom Thread,” which is due to come out at the end of the year. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Day-Lewis is worth $50 million.

“He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject,“ said Day-Lewis’ spokesperson Leslee Dart, in a statement to Variety Tuesday.
The actor’s first role came when he was 14 in the film “Sunday, Bloody Sunday.” He won his first Oscar for best actor in 1989’s “My Left Foot.” In the film, Day-Lewis portrays the real life Irish writer Christy Brown who had cerebral palsy and was only able to type with the toes of one foot. The film is adapted from Brown’s most famous work, his autobiography of the same name. Day-Lewis also won a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award for best actor for the role.
Day-Lewis’ next Best Actor Oscar was for the 2007 film “There Will Be Blood,” which was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Day-Lewis portrays a ruthless oil tycoon in the film and he also won BAFTA and Golden Globe Best Actor awards for the role. Anderson wrote and directed “Phantom Thread,” as well.
His final Oscar came for his portrayal of President Abraham Lincoln in the 2012 film “Lincoln,” directed by Steven Spielberg. Day-Lewis again picked up BAFTA and Golden Globe Best Actor awards for the film.

Day-Lewis was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for the 1993 film “In the Name of the Father” and the 2002 film “Gangs of New York,” directed by Martin Scorsese.

Day-Lewis is known for method acting and spending entire shooting schedules in character. He is also is also known for his extreme privacy and hatred of doing press.
Day-Lewis was born in London, England in 1957 to poet Cecil Day-Lewis and actress Jill Balcon. He is currently married to Rebecca Miller, daughter of playwright Arthur Miller. They have three children together and spend time in Ireland and New York City.
