What Does Bae Mean? Salt Bae, Boot Bae, Hurt Bae, Stranded Bae Explained
Scrolling down your Twitter or Instagram, you may have come across the word "bae." However, if you are not a social media junkie, it is likely that you are having a tough time figuring out what this word actually means.
Bae is widely used on social media and is often thought as a slang for “baby.” The Oxford dictionary defines bae as "a person's boyfriend or girlfriend [often as a form of address]." Not only this, we hear of different types of baes almost every other day — thanks to netizens. And understanding the meaning of those baes can be difficult.
Check out the list of the different kinds of baes going viral of social media.
Salt bae:
Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe took social media by storm in January after a video of him showing off his knife skills was shared on the internet. However, what caught people’s attention was his salt-sprinkling style, which was turned into meme. He is since known as salt bae.
Hurt bae:
On Valentine’s Day, “The Scene” released a video on Twitter with the caption: “He cheated on her. Now she wants to know why.” The video showed a man and a woman who apparently broke up recently. The woman — identified as Kourtney — was seemingly heartbroken and confronted her ex -boyfriend about his infidelity. The man — identified Leon — asked Kourtney why she forgave him. To which she replied: “Because you’re my best friend.”
The video made most social media users emotional and thus hurt bae came to being.
Boot bae:
Boot bae is arguably one of the most hilarious baes in use right now. The term was born after a woman in a black mesh shirt and black bra is seen walking toward a man sitting with his girlfriend, who is wearing a thigh-high red boot at a date auction at a scholarship fundraiser for the University of Houston's Nigerian Student Association. She then stands in front of the man. However, the girlfriend raises one of her legs to stop the woman from coming close to her boyfriend, following which the woman walks away laughing.
This has been now been called boot bae due to the thigh-high boot.
Stranded bae:
A Twitter user posted a tweet saying how her boyfriend paid for her flight and stay to visit him in Washington, D.C. He also made matching t-shirts with her face on it. However, at the last moment, he ditches her at the airport for his friends, partying and another woman. Following this, the woman is now called stranded bae.
