Meghan Markle and Prince Harry would face several changes if they ditched their royal lives.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been subjected to several criticism due to their lifestyle and obsession with privacy. They were criticized for using the taxpayers’ money to fund Frogmore Cottage’s renovation and for flying in private jets while keeping the details of their son Archie private. Some advised them to just leave their royal life and live as private individuals.

According to Patricia Treble of Maclean’s magazine, there will be a lot of changes if the couple ditch their royal life.

If Prince Harry and Markle will voluntarily renounce their royal duties, they have to give up their claims to the throne. This also means that their son and future children will be non-royal.

They will also have to ditch their royal titles as it will be hypocritical for them to hold onto it. In addition, Prince Harry and Markle will have to bid goodbye to their international royal trips and will no longer be the center of attention.

In September, the couple visited South Africa. They even took Archie with them. Many believed that in the said trip, they were able to redeem themselves from the negative headlines that plagued them the entire year. But it changed when the couple announced that they sued a tabloid for releasing Markle’s private letters to her dad.

Prince Harry and Markle may also have to reduce their public appearances to events when the wider family appears such as Trooping the Colour, weddings and funerals. At present, most of their appearances are due to their roles in the Commonwealth and patronages.

Prince Harry and Markle will also lose their free London residence at Kensington Palace, free country residence as well as the privilege to use the royal collection that includes antiques, jewels, furniture and art. Most importantly, they will be affected financially because as working royals, they are financed from the privy purse. If Prince Harry and Markle were to turn their back from their royal obligations, they have to finance their own expenses.

There were rumors that the couple might move to Africa for good. However, according to royal biographer Angela Levin, it’s unlikely that Markle will like the idea of them leaving the royal family now that they are married and are establishing their own family.
