A furious Jurgen Klopp slammed referee Paul Tierney after Liverpool FC were held at a 2-2 draw by Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday.
Klopp was unhappy with Tierney's decision to only give Harry Kane a yellow card for his studs-up tackle on Reds left-back Andy Robertson in the first half. Liverpool were also denied a penalty when Diogo Jota was fouled inside the area by Emerson Royal.
Klopp's side, which was already without some key players due to coronavirus, including center-back Virgil van Dijk, midfielders Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson, was then reduced to 10 men in the second half after Tierney sent off Robertson for his swipe on Spurs defender Royal.
Tierney first gave Robertson a yellow card before he received the incident on the pitch-side monitor and changed his decision that saw the Scotland captain become the first player to score, assist and be sent off in a Premier League game since Aleksandar Mitrovic in May 2016, according to Opta Joe.
Robertson netted the equalizer just a few minutes before receiving the red card.
Klopp confronted Tierney on the pitch after the full-time whistle in North London. "I have no problems with other referees, only you," Klopp told Tierney.
In a post-match interview, when Klopp was asked if Kane should have been sent off, the Liverpool manager said, "Yes definitely. You can give Robbo a red card, it is not the smartest challenge of his career but that is definitely a red card. No doubt about it. His leg was in the air, it was pure coincidence. Harry cannot judge it. If Robbo's leg is on the ground it is a broken leg."
The German boss also criticized the on-field referee for accusing Jota of stopping on purpose because he wants a penalty.
"We have a VAR sitting there and he thinks have a look again at Robertson again. Fine, that's what he is there for. But what did he do in that situation? And then there is the penalty situation with Diogo Jota. Mr. Tierney told me Diogo stops on purpose because he wants the foul. First and foremost if you want to shoot you have to stop because you cannot do both," added Klopp in the Sky Sports interview.
The 2-2 draw meant, Liverpool fell three points behind table-toppers Manchester City in the title race. Liverpool's next game in a League Cup quarter-final clash with Leicester City at Anfield on Wednesday.
