UPDATE: Oct. 2, 2017, 5:30 p.m EDT: This story has been updated to reflect conflicting statements about Petty's condition.
Singer Tom Petty was removed from life support Monday after being rushed to the hospital the previous night. He was found unconscious and not breathing in his Malibu, California home Sunday and was quickly taken to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital. The singer’s life support was pulled Monday after he was found to have no brain activity.
Petty was declared dead Monday afternoon, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed, though hours later the department said the information was inaccurate. The singer was 66 years old. Though he suffered from cardiac arrest, a cause of death remained unclear. His personal appearances manager told Fox News there was “no comment at this time.”
The Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers frontman appeared to be in good health in the days preceding his death. The band wrapped an extensive tour to mark its 40th anniversary just last week. Forbes dubbed him the “classic rock MVP of 2017.”
And while Petty said it would likely be his last major tour, the singer said it was because he wanted to spend more time with his granddaughter, not because of any specific health concerns. He also said the band would keep playing, though not as intensely.
“It’s very likely we’ll keep playing,” Petty told Rolling Stone in December. “But will we take on 50 shows in one tour? I don’t think so. I was thinking this might be the last one. We’re all on the backside of our sixties.”
Petty’s fans and peers in the music industry flocked to Twitter Monday to honor the legendary musician. Many posted Petty’s lyrics and videos of the singer performing, thanking him for 40 years of influential music.
“This is unbearable,” Sheryl Crow wrote. Vegas and now a great music hero has passed. You brought us so much joy, @tompetty. We will miss you.”
