Meghan Markle has been the subject of scrutiny again lately after it was revealed she reportedly allowed five friends to speak out on her behalf in an interview with People Magazine, and now, the Duchess of Sussex is being warned that trying to “play the victim” will backfire on her if she continues trying that approach.

The warning came from The Pledge panelist Carole Malone, who stated that if the former actress wants to keep both the public and the royal family to stay on her side, she would need to quit trying to paint herself to be similar to Princess Diana and playing like she is a victim of negative attention from both the press and her own family.

“Meghan won’t get the public admiration she craves by playing the victim and trying to manipulate the press coverage of her,” she said. “She knows the family motto, never complain, never explain, and if she thinks she can change that by getting her friends to tell the world how wrong, yet how wonderful she is, the Palace and the public will turn on her.”

However, she also admitted that she didn’t think the Duchess’ so-called friends—or even George Clooney, who also spoke out on her behalf after her father released a personal letter she wrote him—are helping matters by speaking out either.

“They told the world she is being traumatized and bullied and none of the criticism of her is justified because she is perfect and wonderful,” she said. “I’m sorry, I just don’t buy that any true friend would have spoken without Meghan’s explicit permission. They were doing exactly what Meghan had begged her dad not to do, to speak about her in the media.”

“Now George Clooney has weighed in claiming Meghan’s being chased just like Diana was, but who exactly is chasing and bullying and traumatizing her? Not her family, who she has had no contact with and who have been silent for months,” she added. “As for the few scraps of criticism in the media, that’s nothing like what happened to Diana.”
