There would be a huge change in Edinburgh if Queen Elizabeth II were to die in Scotland.

At present, the Queen is enjoying her annual summer break in her favorite home, Balmoral Castle, in Scotland. Due to the Queen’s age, some wonder what would happen to Edinburgh if in case the Queen would die in the country.

If the Queen were to die at her retreat home in Scotland, her body would be brought to Holyrood Palace. The businesses would be suspended in Parliament and the funeral would take place within 10 days of her death.

The palace, along with the Scottish Parliament and St. Giles’ Cathedral, would become the main focus for the public and the world’s media. Her coffin would be carried to the cathedral where she would lie in state. Many people are expected to queue to sign a book of condolence at Holyrood.

If Queen Elizabeth II were to die, the first person to be informed would be her private secretary Sir Christopher Geidt. He would then inform the prime minister before the news would be released to the 15 other countries and the rest of the 26 Commonwealth nations.

The news will not be official until it is announced by the Buckingham Palace. The media will also be informed ahead of the general public and a period of mourning will follow.

The Queen’s death is expected to affect the market and advertising industry just like what happened when Princess Diana died.

“The Queen's death will be a shock that will make the passing of Diana, now some 20 years ago, look relatively tame in my view,” Francis Ingham, director general of the PRCA, said.

“Brands must make some tough decisions quickly. Do they continue to run adverts? How do they change their social media activity? Have they in fact prepared contingency plans for just this very eventuality, as doubtless central government has?”

When the Queen passes away, the other royal family member’s positions and roles would also be affected. Prince Charles would take over the throne and become the new king. Camilla Parker Bowles would become the new queen consort. Meanwhile, Prince William and Kate Middleton would be the new Prince and Princess of Wales.
