Does Kate Middleton have to change her name if she becomes queen?
One netizen asked this question on Quora. The inquiry received a number of responses from other royal fans, with many stressing that the Duchess of Cambridge’s name is not “Kate” but “Catherine.”
According to Julie Parsons, former RGN at National Heath Service, Middleton’s name “Kate” was from the media. She was never called in such name by her friends and family. Even Prince William addresses her as “Catherine” because it’s her name.
“She will become Queen Consort Catherine when her husband becomes King William or by any other name they prefer,” Parsons wrote. “Only the people outside the UK insist on her being called Kate Middleton.”
Chris Hawkes, a supporter of constitutional monarchy, also said that Middleton never used the name “Kate.” He hopes that when Prince William becomes king, she will be called using her real name.
“Please God, let her be called Queen Catherine! Even by the sewer press and their vacuous audience!” he wrote.
Meanwhile, Lou Mazzola thinks that Middleton will most likely retain her name. She added that short names such as “Kate” have always been appropriate. So, she believes that Queen Kate is fine.
The monarchs can change their names if they want to. When Prince Charles takes over the throne after Queen Elizabeth II, he can be King Charles III or use other names.
However, according to royal expert Dickie Arbiter, it’s more likely that the Prince of Wales would pick another name because the first two Charles who reigned before him had a bad reputation.
“He might choose one of his other names Philip, Arthur or George,” Arbiter said.
Princess Diana’s brother Charles Spencer wrote the book “To Catch A King: Charles II’s Great Escape.” In his publication, he called Charles II as someone who had “unashamed self-indulgence” who had huge appetites for food, drinks and women.
Spencer added that Charles II didn’t have a legitimate heir because his wife, Catherine fo Braganza, wasn’t able to produce him one. However, he had many children from his seven mistresses. On the other hand, Charles I was executed following the English Civil War.
