What's Meniere's Disease? Singer Jessie J Wakes Up 'Completely Deaf' in one ear
Crooner Jessie J was hospitalized on Christmas Eve after she lost hearing in one ear. The official diagnosis: Meniere’s disease.
"I woke up and felt like I was completely deaf in my right ear, couldn't walk in a straight line," Jessie J explained on Instagram Live.
Meniere’s disease is an inner ear disorder that can cause dizziness, vertigo and hearing loss, according to the Mayo Clinic. In most cases, like Jessie J's, patients lose hearing in only one ear.
The “Bang, Bang” singer doesn’t know what brought this on or how she contracted the disease.
A few possible causes, according to the Mayo Clinic: improper fluid drainage, an abnormal immune response, a viral infection or a genetic predeposition.
Meniere’s disease isn’t a permanent condition, though, and can clear up after only one episode.
After her Instagram Live, Jessie J heard from fans and followers. They gave her both tips on how to cope with Meniere’s disease and get-well-soon wishes.
“Keep a really low salt diet with Meniere’s disease,” one user posted.
“Hope you can control the symptoms and be ok. Merry Christmas,” another wrote.
Doctors put Jessie J on medication to ease the symptoms and is recovering, E! reported.
