ABCs sci-fi thriller “Emergence” has earned a 94% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and general high praise across the board since its September premiere. Despite this, the possibility of a second season still remains tentative.

Deadline reported in October that “Emergence” had not yet been renewed for Season 2 given "its modest ratings performance," stating that "ABC brass will likely wait to look at their development before making a renewal decision." Still, that doesn't mean last week's episode was the end of "Emergence."

Last viewers saw, the series ended on a massive cliffhanger. Benny Gallagher (Owain Yeoman), a seeming ally to the Evans family all season, and Helen (Rowena King) were shown glowing, much like AI Piper (Alexa Swinton) can. Exactly how many of these AIs exist in the “Emergence” world wasn't revealed in episode 9, but fans may get some answers in the next installment.

ABC revealed via its official Twitter page for the show on Dec. 10 that the series will return with a new episode on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

According to Cinemablend's report last month, “Emergence” premiered with high scores in the 18-49 age demographic. However, for reasons unknown, the show’s viewership has recently been on a steady decline. The outlet reports that viewership fells in the show's key age demographic when episode 9 was delayed by ABC until Dec. 10, for reasons unknown.

"Emergence" follows Jo Evans (Allison Tolman), a police chief on a Long Island town that suddenly starts experiencing strange events following a plane crash. A little girl, Piper, appears and Jo decides to take her in and take care of her for the time being which is an unassuming good deed -- until the little girl begins exhibiting strange telekinetic powers. That’s only the beginning of their strange journey.

Only time will tell if fans will be able to see the end of that journey.
