When Does ‘Shameless’ Season 9 Release On Netflix?
UPDATE: Aug. 21 -- Netflix has confirmed that “Shameless” Season 9 will be available to stream in September. Get the details.
UPDATE: Aug. 5 -- “Shameless” Season 10 officially has a November premiere date on Showtime. That means Season 9 will likely release on Netflix in September or October.
Original story: “Shameless” Season 9 is officially over after last night’s finale, but there are still people waiting for the season to start. Many fans of the Gallagher family wait for each season to release on Netflix, but they’ll be waiting for quite a while.
Netflix has not announced a release date for “Shameless” Season 9 yet. However, there are some clues about when to expect the news.
As reported last year, Showtime has an exclusivity period on all their shows. The standard wait time for a Showtime program on Netflix is nine months. That doesn’t necessarily mean fans will be waiting until the end of 2019 for “Shameless” Season 9, though.
Audiences only had to wait six months for a new season last year. That’s probably because “Shameless” had an early premiere date. Season 8 hit Netflix on July 28, and the Season 9 premiere aired on TV on Sept. 9. Showtime gives viewers a little time to catch up or re-watch on Netflix before the new season starts.
It’s likely that “Shameless” will get a premiere date on Netflix that’s just weeks before Season 10 airs on TV. If that is true, then late summer is the probably earliest “Shameless” Season 9 could drop on the streaming platform. Still, subscribers will have to wait for Showtime to announce a start date for the new episodes before they can start speculating about an exact Netflix release date.
Those who don’t want to wait for Netflix to release “Shameless” Season 9 can check out the latest season on Showtime.com, which has the entire series available for streaming. There is a free 7-day trial for new users.
Season 9 was a big one for the Gallaghers because it involved a lot of goodbyes. Cameron Monaghan, who plays Ian, temporarily left the dramedy midseason while Emmy Rossum’s Fiona was written out of the show in the season finale.
Monaghan and the remaining cast will return for Season 10, which will return to the 12-episode format.
