When Does ‘Star Wars: Episode 9’ Come Out? LucasFilm Announces Official Release Date
“Star Wars” fans will be venturing back into a galaxy far, far away before they know it. The third and final film in the trilogy has received an official release date.
“Star Wars: Episode IX” will hit theaters on May 24, 2019. In a blog post on StarWars.Com, it was confirmed that the film will be directed by Colin Trevorrow. The film will follow “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” which is slated for release on December 15, 2017.
Little is known about the plot of “Episode IX.” Production began on the film in 2016, at the same time as “The Last Jedi,” according to Entertainment Weekly. The publication did not know what work was being done for the third installment of the new trilogy at the time and speculated that it would be released in 2019.
While we don’t know what to expect from “Episode IX,” we have some idea what’ll go down when we catch up with Rey (Daisey Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and the rest of the gang in “The Last Jedi.” A trailer for the film was released on April 14. The short clip kicks off with Rey gasping for air while trying to get her bearings on what appears to be a planet foreign to her. A voice, seemingly belonging to Luke Skywalker, instructs her to remain calm and pay attention to her surroundings.
The trailer also features an appearance by Finn, who’s shown flying through space, Po’s (Oscar Isaac) X-Wing exploding again and a shadowy figure devising a devious plan. While there’s no shortage of action in the trailer, it’s the final moment that we think may be most telling of what’s to come in “The Last Jedi.” Before the clip wraps, the mysterious villain calls for the Jedis to be wiped out.
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” will hit theaters December 15, 2017. “Episode IX” will follow on May 24, 2019.
