ABC’s “Designated Survivor” aired its midseason finale last Wednesday, which means there will be no new episode this week, and there will be quite a few more weeks without one after that.

The Kiefer Sutherland-led series will return on Feb. 28 with the eleventh episode of its second season. The title of the episode, as well as the synopsis of what will happen during it, has not yet been released.

That’s probably a good thing, though, as fans’ minds need some time to properly sift through everything that happened during episode 10, “Line of Fire,” last week, including the death of President Kirkman’s (Sutherland) wife, Alex (Natascha McElhone).

The First Lady was killed in a car accident, but whether or not it was actually an accident or on purpose remains to be known.

“I think it has all the earmarks of randomness, but I’m not going to punctuate that now,” showrunner Keith Eisner told TVLine about Alex’s death. “People will have to tune in to see if that’s in fact true. But what’s interesting for all of us is that Alex’s death comes out of the blue. It wasn’t drum-rolled, it wasn’t set up, it wasn’t expected.”

What we do know is that when the show picks back up it will be 10 weeks later and President Kirkman will be left to both run the country, while also raising his two children as a single parent.

“We’re going to pick up with how he has been dealing with the loss of his wife and the mother of his children, his best friend,” Eisner said. “And it’s not an easy transition. Episode 11 deals with that uneasiness in a very interesting way, and the remaining part of the season will deal with it too, the consequences of being alone and what that means for him.”

One thing that isn’t on its way anytime soon is a new romance for President Kirkman, as it will just be too soon for him after his wife’s death, though Eisner told TV Guide that the chance of romance isn’t completely off the table in the future.

“We will perhaps hint at the possibility of a romance,” Eisner said. “But we won’t get there too quickly.”

ABC’s “Designated Survivor” returns with Season 2 episode 11 on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 10 p.m. EST.
