Which Songs Streamed The Most In 2021? Spotify Releases Annual 'Wrapped'
Music streaming service Spotify on Wednesday unveiled its annual list of the most-streamed songs globally with Wrapped 2021.
“If 2020 was the year that flipped the world on its head, 2021 was the year that we got used to seeing things upside down,” Spotify wrote in their release marking the day.
Olivia Rodrigo took the top spot for the most-streamed song on Spotify for 2021 with “drivers license,” which was streamed 1.1 billion times. The American singer-songwriter also took the top for the fourth most streamed song with “good 4 u,” a song that earned the title of Spotify’s Song of the Summer for 2021.
Included in the top five most-streamed songs on Spotify was the song “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” by Lil Nas X. The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber’s collaboration “Stay” took third place. Dua Lipa’s song “Levitating (feat. DaBaby)” took fifth place on the most-streamed songs of 2021.
Spotify also announced that Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican Reggaeton singer, was for the second year in a row the most streamed artist in the world on the platform. The artist had over 9.1 billion streams, but no new album or song releases this year.
Rounding out the top three streamed artists on Spotify included Taylor Swift because of her re-released album “Red (Taylors Version).” BTS’ song, “Butter,” included the South Korean k-pop boy band in the top three to round out the pack.
Honorable mentions in the top five included Drake, who released “Certified Lover Boy,” and Justin Bieber, whose album “Justice,” featured artists from around the world and put him in the top five most-streamed artists.
Spotify also included some interesting facts about what people listened to in 2021.
Playlists on Spotify related to the viral TikTok pug Noodle, and whether he has bones or not, grew to nearly 1,500 to help people get up or stay in.
There were also 42m streams of vaccine-related playlists on Spotify in 2021, with top songs including “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar, Lady Gaga’s “The Cure”, the iconic single “Jolene” by Dolly Parton, “Save Your Tears” from The Weekend, and Whitney Houston made the list as well with the hit “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).”
The pandemic’s spike in plant owners led people to music that may enhance plant growth, with Spotify announcing that the platforms “Music for Plants” playlist grew 1,400% during the pandemic.
