Who Is Ashley Biden? Joe's Daughter To Replace Ivanka Trump As First Daughter
KEY POINTS
- Ashley is Jill and Joe's only daughter
- The youngest Biden family member is an advocate for criminal justice reform
- She once launched a fashion line called Livelihood
When President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in as the nation's 46th president on Jan. 20, Ashley Biden will become the first daughter.
While the Biden family has been in the spotlight for more than a decade, Ashley has remained under the radar. However, the youngest Biden family member has cemented her name as a civically minded fashion icon and criminal-justice reform advocate.
Here’s what you need to know about the future first daughter.
She Is the Youngest Of Biden’s Children
Ashley was born on June 8, 1981, to Biden’s second wife, Jill. One of her half brothers, Beau, passed away from brain cancer in 2015; the other, Hunter, is a lawyer. Her half-sister Naomi was killed in a 1972 car accident alongside Biden’s first wife, Neilia, who was 30 then. They were in the family’s Chevrolet station wagon when a tractor-trailer broadsided them. Naomi was only 13 months old.
She Keeps A Low Profile
The 39-year-old has kept her life separate from the public eye, and hasn't made many social appearances. She once admitted that being in public settings has made it difficult for her to feel at ease.
In one of her rare public events, Ashley appeared at the Women Rule 2014 Summit in Washington, where she was invited to give a speech.
“It’s an honor to be here amongst a room full of women who rule,” she said. “There is actually a really good energy and I actually feel comfortable, and in these types of things I normally don’t.”

She Advocates For Criminal Justice Reform
Ashley Biden joined the Delaware Center for Justice as associate director in 2012. The non-profit organization conducts research and offers programs to those who were incarcerated. She was appointed as the executive director two years later.
The youngest Biden child received her undergraduate degree from Tulane University, and her master's of social work from the University of Pennsylvania.
Before her work with the Delaware Center for Justice, Ashley worked as a social worker at the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth and their Families. Her work with the agency allowed her to create programs aimed at helping youth in the “juvenile-justice, foster-care, and mental health systems,” The New York Times reported.
She Has A Fashion Line
In 2017, Ashley established an American-made clothing brand, Livelihood. The ethically-assembled fashion line, which launched at New York Fashion Week, raised $30,000 for the Delaware Community Foundation.
The Livelihood logo, an arrow shooting through "LH," is a tribute to her late half-brother Beau, who she said was “my bow.”
“His cancer brought me to my knees. I had no choice but to shoot forward, keep going, keep aiming at my own dreams,” Ashley said.
She Trended On Social Media
Ashley was mentioned numerous times on various social media platforms after footage from Joe Biden’s victory speech in Wilmington, Delaware, showed her dancing in the background.
The footage was well-received by social media users, with one user comparing her to Pippa Middleton.
