Adult film actress August Ames died Tuesday in Camarillo, California, at the age of 23. Ames, born Mercedes Grabowkski, reportedly suffered from depression, according to Hollywood Life.

Ames was married to adult film director Kevin Moore. Moore released a statement through industry trade magazine Adult Video News regarding her death.

“She was the kindest person I ever knew and she meant the world to me,” Moore told Adult Video News. “Please live this as a private family matter in this difficult time.”

Ames was recently the victim of malicious commentary on social media as people called her homophobic for not working with a man who had shot gay porn in the past. She fired back on her own Twitter account, denying the accusations.

“I don’t have anything to apologize for!” she wrote. “Apologizing for taking extra steps to ensure that my body stays safe? F--- you guys attacking me when none of my intentions were malicious. I f------ love the gay community! What the f--- ever! I CHOOSE who I have inside my body. No hate.”
