Who Is In The Royal Family? Queen Elizabeth's Family Includes Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry And More
Reports of Queen Elizabeth’s illness has left several Britons worried about their 90-year-old monarch, who skipped Christmas service for the first time in decades this year. Meanwhile, false reports of her death have also been circulating on social media, putting the future of U.K.’s monarchy to debate.
While the lives of those closest in line to succeed the world’s longest reigning living monarch are well-documented, the ones farther down the line don’t make headlines too often. The members of the royal family help the queen with her royal duties. The royal family collectively carry out 2,000 official engagements throughout the U.K. and worldwide.
Queen Elizabeth II has had four children — Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward — with her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Philip, in 2009, became the longest serving British consort.
Charles, the prince of Wales, is first in line to ascend the throne. He was first married to Princess Diana of Wales, with whom he had two sons — Prince William and Prince Harry. Charles and Diana later separated and their marriage was dissolved in 1996. The princess was killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997.
Charles later married Camilla Parker Bowles who became the Duchess of Cornwall.
Prince William, the duke of Cambridge, is second in line to the throne. He was 15 years old when his mother, Diana, passed away. He married Kate Middleton in 2011. The couple have a son Prince George, born in 2013 and a daughter, Princess Charlotte, born in 2015. George and Charlotte are third and fourth in line to the throne respectively.
Charles and Diana’s second son Prince Harry trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and later served as a helicopter pilot earning the title of Lieutenant in the British Army.
Prince Andrew is the second son and third child of the queen and the duke of Edinburgh. Named the duke of York, he had two daughters — Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie — with his then-wife Sarah Ferguson, the duchess of York. Their marriage was dissolved in 1996.
Prince Edward, the queen’s third son, was given the title Earl of Wessex and Viscount Severn. He has two children with his wife Sophie Rhys-Jones, Lady Louise and James, Viscount Severn.
Princess Anne is the queen’s second child and only daughter. She was given the title Princess Royal and has been married twice. She had two children from her first marriage to Captain Mark Phillips, Peter and Zara. Her children do not have royal titles as they are descendants of the female line and because Mark Phillips refused the offer of an earldom when he married Princess Anne.
Peter Phillips is the queen’s eldest grandchild. He has two daughters — Savannah and Isla — from his marriage to Autumn Kelly. Savannah is also the queen’s eldest great-grandchild.
Zara Tindall is a successful athlete who won a silver medal at the London Olympics in 2012. She married former rugby player Mike Tindall in 2011 and the two have a daughter Mia Grace.
