Tragedy struck the set of DC Comics' original streaming series “Titans” on Thursday evening. Warren Appleby, the superhero show’s special effects coordinator, was killed during the testing of a vehicular sequence at an effects facility in Toronto, according to reports from Deadline and Hollywood Reporter.

Production on the DC Universe show’s second season has been shut down for two days while Appleby is mourned.

“We are heartbroken and devastated by the passing of our treasured colleague, special effects coordinator Warren Appleby, after an accident which occurred at a special effects facility during the preparation and testing for an upcoming shoot,” Warner Bros. and DC Universe said in an official statement. “Warren is beloved by all who worked with him during an impressive 25-year career in television and motion pictures.”

Appleby’s storied career in show business included effects work on numerous high-profile projects, including Guillermo del Toro’s 2018 best picture winner “The Shape of Water” and the forthcoming blockbuster Stephen King sequel, “It: Chapter 2.” Throughout his career, he became a go-to talent for del Toro on productions like “The Strain” and “Mama,” and director David Cronenberg on films like “Cosmopolis” and “Maps to the Stars.”

“I knew Warren as a top-notch FX man but I admired him as a father and family man, and a colleague, too,” del Toro said in a statement to Deadline. “He always gave you his 100% percent. He was very near and very dear and an integral part of our core team. He will be always be beloved and admired.”

“Titans” is a dark reimagining of the beloved DC Comics superhero team, the Teen Titans, featuring the characters Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, and Raven. It premiered on the DC Universe streaming platform last October and its second season will debut sometime in late 2019.
