Who Was Reeva Steenkamp? Murdered Model's Former Boyfriend Oscar Pistorius Hospitalized

Former Paralympic and Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius was hospitalized Thursday morning in Pretoria, South Africa, for medical examinations after complaining of chest pain, reports said. Pistorius is currently serving a six-year sentence for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

Department of Correctional Services (DCS) spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo told The Citizen in South Africa: "We can state that offender Oscar Pistorius was taken to an outside hospital facility this morning for a medical examination."

The DCS confirmed to SAfm News that Pistorius was being treated for a possible heart condition after the personnel at the Atteridgeville Prison suspected Pistorius suffered a heart attack.

Pistorius' family spokesperson Johan van Wyk told the Citizen that he was "okay." The former Paralympian has previously received treatment in August 2016 after he reportedly slit his wrists while in prison.

Pistorius made headlines in 2011 and 2012 when he became the first track and field athlete to compete in both the Paralympic and Olympic Games where he raced against non-disabled athletes. In 2013, he was convicted of murdering his girlfriend whom he shot and killed her in February that year at his residence, claiming he had mistaken her for an intruder hiding in his bathroom.

Steenkamp, 29, had been in a relationship with Pistorius for nearly three months when he shot her four times through a locked bathroom door on Valentine’s Day in 2013. Pistorius has always maintained that he acted in self-defense, however, prosecutors claimed that he shot with intent to kill.

"There’s a space missing inside all of the people that she knew that can’t be filled again," her brother Adam Steenkamp said in his eulogy at her funeral. "We’re going to keep all the positive things that we remember and know about my sister and we will try and continue with the things that she tried to make better. We’ll miss her."

Born in Cape Town, Steenkamp has two siblings and was raised in Port Elizabeth as a child, according to the Independent. Steenkamp later moved to Johannesburg in 2007 in order to start her career as a model. She became a national celebrity after her modeling stints with Toyota, Clover, Zui and FHM and she was also the face of Avon. She would have appeared as a contestant on the South African TV show "Tropika Island of Treasure 5," which was due for transmission just the week after she was killed in February 2013.

Steenkamp completed her graduation in Law at the University of Port Elizabeth in 2005 and started working as a paralegal before applying to the bar in late 2011. She had hoped to become a legal advocate before she would have turned 30. Kerry Smith, a 35-year-old legal assistant, told the Independent in 2016, how concerned the model was about her future. "She always said modeling would not last – you need to have something to come back to," Smith had said. Steenkamp was said to have shown support for campaigns against rape and domestic violence against women during her career as a model.

Pistorius is serving a six-year prison sentence for killing Steenkamp. The paralympian spent a year in prison in Pretoria before being granted parole and released to house arrest in October 2015. However, South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeals changed the verdict in December 2015 and convicted him of murder, saying that he should have been aware he was murdering someone when he fired four shots into the bathroom door in his residence. In July 2016, he was sentenced to six years in prison and has been behind bars since, the Guardian reported.
