Who Is Yael Stone? Australian Actress Accuses Oscar Winner Geoffrey Rush Of Sexual Misconduct
Accusations of lewd workplace behavior surfaced Sunday against Academy Award-winning actor Geoffrey Rush by former on-stage co-star Yael Stone in an extensive interview with the New York Times.
Stone, who like Rush is from Australia, told the Times that Rush behaved inappropriately on multiple occasions when the two starred together in a stage production of "Diary of a Madman" in 2010 and 2011.
She accused the 67-year-old of taking his clothes off and dancing in front of her in a dressing room and using a mirror to watch her shower. Stone also claimed that Rush sent her sexually inappropriate text messages.
Rush, who won Best Actor for the 1996 film "Shine," was previously accused of similar misconduct by a co-star in a production of "King Lear" in 2017.
At the time of the alleged incidents, Rush was 59 and Stone was 25.
Rush denied the allegations in a statement to CNN.
The Times piece cited Rush’s stature in the world of Australian theatre and Australia’s libel laws as reasons why Stone did not come out with her accusations sooner. In Australian defamation cases, the burden of proof is on the accuser and not the accused.
Stone, 33, is best known for her role as Lorna Morello in the popular Netflix series "Orange is the New Black." She gained prominence and acclaim in theatre and television in Australia.
The Sydney native was born to Jewish parents and currently resides in New York City. She has a brother and sister, both of whom are musicians.
Stone married Australian actor Dan Spielman in 2012. The couple divorced in 2016.
Stone has been in a relationship with Jack Manning Bancroft since 2017. They have a daughter, Pemau Stone Bancroft, who was born in May.
