Why Is Danny Boyle Done With Franchises After ‘Bond 25’?
“Trainspotting” filmmaker Danny Boyle made a very public departure from the director’s chair of “Bond 25,” and the process seems to have left some scars.
Speaking with Metro while promoting his upcoming Beatles musical, “Yesterday,” Boyle revealed that his time working on “Bond 25” had soured him on ever taking another franchise gig again.
“I learned my lesson that I am not cut out [for big franchise films] otherwise you’re digging in the same hole,” Boyle said. “I am better not quite in the mainstream franchise movies, is the honest answer.”
Boyle further elaborated that the collaborative nature of his writing process was something that he was unwilling to tamper with to make the next 007 adventure.
“I learned quite a lot about myself with Bond, I work in partnership with writers and I am not prepared to break it up,” Boyle said. “We were working very, very well, but they didn’t go down that route with us, so we decided to part company and it would be unfair to say what it was because I don’t know what Cary [Fukunaga] is going to do.”
While nothing is known for sure about Boyle departure, rumors point to Eon Productions being unwilling to let Boyle killed Bond at the end of the film, which is slated to be Daniel Craig’s last outing.
Cary Fukunaga, director of “Beasts of No Nation” and “True Detective” Season 1, was eventually brought in to replace Boyle, making him the franchise’s first ever American director. The film is currently in the midst of principal photography and will release in the U.S. on April 8, 2020.
