Why Margot Robbie Loves Harley Quinn And Joker’s Romance
Margot Robbie enjoys a twisted romance. The actress spoke about her interest in tortured lovers while explaining how excited she is for the new movie focusing on Harley Quinn and the Joker.
“I’m personally a sucker for a love story,” the actress told Coming Soon. “In any iteration. I think people enjoy seeing two characters who, in Harley and Joker’s case, would die for one another. It’s kind of romantic in a messed up way.”
She’s not the only one interested in the dark romance. Audiences already got a glimpse at Harley (Robbie) and Joker’s (Jared Leto) love story in “Suicide Squad,” and the reaction led to Warner Bros. ordering a Harley Quinn and Joker movie.
As previously reported, an insider described it as “an insane and twisted love story. ‘When Harry Met Sally’ on benzedrine.”
“Crazy Stupid Love” directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa will helm the movie in addition to writing the script. It’ll be a reunion for Robbie, who has worked with the “This Is Us” producers on a couple films before. In 2015, she made the crime dramedy “Focus” with them (as well as Deadshot actor Will Smith), and in 2016 she appeared in their war dramedy “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.” The Australian actress is excited to reunite with them.
“I heard that too,” Robbie said when asked about the directors. “They’re great! It’s fun working with a directing duo, and I love them. I’ve obviously done two films with them so I think they’re just brilliant.”
Robbie still doesn’t know when exactly she’ll be working with them, though. While she is set to appear in the Joker and Harley Quinn movie, “Suicide Squad 2” and “Gotham City Sirens,” scheduling hasn’t been confirmed yet.
“I think next year I’ll be back in the fishnets, wielding a baseball bat, I hope,” Robbie told The Wrap earlier this month.
However, when asked which film she would be shooting next year, she was unsure. “Your guess is as good as mine at this point. I don’t know,” she laughed.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the untitled romance will actually film after “Suicide Squad 2.” The sequel is being prioritized because the studio is concerned the actors’ holding agreements will run out. The follow-up to the 2016 film will be directed by Gavin O’Connor, who helmed Ben Affleck’s “The Accountant.”
O’Connor is taking over for David Ayer, who is developing “Gotham City Sirens.” Harley Quinn is the only character fans know for sure will be in the female-focused movie, but if the flick follows the comics, she’ll be terrorizing Gotham with Catwoman and Poison Ivy.
This year, however, is not about villains. DC’s 2017 films are all about the heroes. “Wonder Woman” has raked in over $800 million worldwide since being released in June. Gal Gadot’s next appearance as the Amazonian princess will be in “Justice League” alongside Batman (Affleck), The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher). The movie is set to hit theaters Nov. 17.
