They’re often compared when it comes to their fashion and style, but Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have one very key difference between them when it comes to an important part of their individual looks—their hair.

While Middleton generally always wears her hair down, Markle is known for often tying her locks up into ponytails, buns and topknots. According to hairdresser Troy Alexandros, the Duchess of Sussex likely has a very specific reason for doing her hair in this manner, however.

“Meghan’s hair is naturally very, very curly, after years of Brazilian blow-dry sessions the hair can become straighter than before,” he told Express UK. “This can cause a curlier root which is definitely not a good look for someone always in the press!”

“I do wonder if Meghan just hasn’t found the time to get her keratin topped up and has found a fantastic trick of hiding this,” he added. “A tidy updo is also a great way to hid fuzzy edges and curls which can appear after a hard, busy day of royal affairs.”

Markle had previously revealed in the past that she often got Brazilian blowouts in her hair to maintain her look, and it was something that only lasted a few months at a time.

“My mom is black and my dad is Dutch and Irish, so the texture of my hair is densely curly. I’ve been getting Brazilian blowouts for a couple of years,” she admitted in 2011.

However, notably, Middleton rarely keeps her hair in any form of an up-do and keeps it down—though Express UK notes it could be because of a three-inch scar on the side of her head from a childhood operation.

Of course, she doesn’t always keep her hair down, and will occasionally wear her hair in a loose, low style for formal events.
