Why Is ‘Pretty Little Liars’ Ending After Season 7 On Freeform?
After years of tuning into Freeform on Tuesday nights to catch the latest episode of “Pretty Little Liars,” the series will finally come to an end this summer. While many series end due to bad ratings, “PLL” is going out on top, and it was all part of the plan.
During an interview with Variety, Freeform’s Executive Vice President Karey Burke revealed why the series had to come to an end following Season 7. The VP explained that seven seasons was always the plan due to “creative forces.”
“It’s rare that you have a chance to send a series out on top, which the feeling very much was that this would achieve. It ultimately comes down to [showrunner] Marlene [King] and her vision, and her sense of where the natural place for the narrative to end was, and this was that,” Burke explained.

Burke promised that fans would be satisfied with the way the series ends. “I think they will be glad that they stayed on the ride. It’s mind-blowing, it’s provocative, it’s everything the audience has come to expect from the show. It’s unexpected, and completely and totally satisfying.”
However, it should be noted that King told a fan on Twitter that when the series finally reveals the identity of A.D., it would be a sad day. “Every villain has a real human story. The best villains are relatable people. In my humble opinion,” King tweeted.
Despite feelings of sadness, cast member Lucy Hale believes that the reveal of Uber A will make sense to fans. “I think mainly it’s the question that the show has revolved around for seven seasons, which is Who is Uber A? Who is behind all of this?” Hale told Teen Vogue.
“You finally get to figure out who that is and why this person has been out to get us for so long. It kind of comes out of left field too. You see what’s going on, and it makes a lot of sense,” the actress explained.
King also teased that with the series finale comes a happy ending for couples on the series. “I’m a hopeless romantic. I think that our fans, as much as they’ve enjoyed the mystery of the show, they’ve enjoyed the romance, as well,” she told Variety.
“I think the couples that are meant to be together will find their way back together,” King stated.
“Pretty Little Liars” Season 7 will return Tuesday, April 18 at 8 p.m. EDT on Freeform.
