Why Prince William’s Christening Memorabilia From 1982 Was Dubbed ‘Ironic’
Prince William’s christening memorabilia from 1982 has been dubbed as ironic.
At that time, a limited-edition silver spoon was released to commemorate the future king’s christening. But royal fans couldn’t help but connect the memorabilia to the phrase, “born with a silver spoon.” The sentence is used to refer to someone born into a wealthy family.
Royal fans were encouraged to buy their own limited-edition silver spoon for £35 or $44. But the value of the silver spoon has skyrocketed to £121 or over $152. An ad for the silver spoon was published by the Guardian on July 8, 1982, and it was accompanied by an application form.
Only one silver spoon per collector was allowed to be purchased. The spoon was created by David Cornell and hallmarked by the London Assay Office. On one side of the silver spoon are Prince William’s name and his christening date.
The Duke of Cambridge was christened on Aug 4, 1982, at the music room of the Buckingham Palace. The date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of the Queen Mother.
Prince William was baptized by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the dad of three wore the traditional christening attire that was also worn by Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, and the other members of the royal family.
Several years later, Prince William and Kate Middleton became blessed with three children. Prince George was born on July 22, 2013, and he was christened on Oct. 23 at the Chapel Royal at St. James’s Palace.
Princess Charlotte was born on May 2, 2015, and she was christened on July 5 of the same year at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham. Prince Louis was born on April 23, 2018, and he was christened on July 9 at the Chapel Royal at St. James’s Palace.
Royal christenings are important events in the British clan. This month, it will be Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son’s turn to be baptized, but his ceremony will be done in private.
